What is Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy?
Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) is a gentle, light touch modality that helps to regulate the nervous system, release tension and bring more balance into the body. While the primal framework of craniosacral therapy honors and works with balancing the craniosacral system and the flow of cerebral spinal fluid, it is really an integrative approach to health, taking into consideration whole body dynamics and their interconnections. One of the main principles of BCST is the respect and acknowledgment of the natural healing capacities of the body and that it is always striving for health and homeostasis. BCST promotes well-being and the natural, innate ability for your body to heal.
The more I learn about the body and its wisdom, the more I am in reverence of its intelligence and mysterious ways of working. It is truly amazing.
How someone experiences craniosacral therapy will vary from person to person and someone's relationship to it will change over time. The journey can have unexpected discoveries. This is the beauty of this approach--the client and their uniqueness will shape how a session unfolds. One of the first things that caught my attention when I was considering training in BCST is the important role that safety has in this type of work. Safety is one of the foundations from which we start to offer this therapy. This continues to be a guiding principle in my work -- to offer a safe space to support, ground, listen and hold space for the intelligence of your body to speak.
There is value in the more tangible, physical understanding of our health (anatomy, how our bodies work, etc.) and also in the unknown, intangible and mysterious aspects of our health. There is a physical reality to our experience that cannot be ignored; and, at the same time, there is also an undeniable mysterious quality to our lives and the unfolding of life. I am interested in bridging these two realms/experiences--the physical and the mysterious.
Who can benefit from craniosacral therapy?
The wonderful quality of BCST is that it is a gentle type of bodywork that works in gradual ways, so that it does not overwhelm a client's system. In this way, someone can integrate the experience and changes more gradually and safely, according to their specific needs and pacing. Because of this, BCST is also a great approach to working with a variety of people and conditions. Examples include: people experiencing TMJ discomfort, back pain, headaches/sinus infections, stress/anxiety/tension, nervous system dysfunction, hormonal imbalances, post surgery recovery, and physical or emotional or birth trauma. BCST can also benefit people during pregnancy or perinatal time, as well as babies and children and people in their older years/end of life journey. BCST can be of great support to people during life transitions to help them integrate their experiences.
What a session looks like:
During a session, the client lies fully clothed on a massage table, either on their back or side. I use light touch to orient and listen to your body and your system, so that it can release tension and restrictions which can help support your body's return to optimal health.
Please note: Craniosacral therapy is not psychotherapy and I am not a licensed psychologist. If you are not sure if craniosacral therapy is appropriate for you and your situation, please contact me and we can discuss the options of working together, in addition to your support from a licensed psychologist.
